Chapter 10

I was happy I had volunteered to cover for Isabella at Moonstruck Manor the next morning. Keeping busy kept my mind off Luke and our lack of a relationship. When he showed up at six this morning to help me cook, I dismissed him, saying I had it under control. As quickly as he disappeared, I was certain he could sense the tension in the air as clear as I could.

After breakfast, I took a few moments to groom and give love to my plants outside, feeling a bit guilty for chasing Luke away that morning. I jumped and dropped the dead raspberry canes I had clutched to my chest when Luke interrupted me.

“Sorry,” he said, and I could hear more in that one little word than his apology for making me drop the branches. “I’m going to take Isabella to bail Sebastian out. Did you want to come along?”

My heart hummed. “Yes. I’d love to.” Despite everything, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Not only was it the big day when Sebastian and Isabella would be reunited, but Luke was still thinking about me enough to invite me. As we loaded into his red Rolls-Royce that had been parked in the garage on our way to pick up Isabella, I filled the air with just another thing that had been heavy on my mind, even causing me to lose sleep last night.

“Last night was the first full moon since you gave up your freedom.”

“I am aware.” Luke’s words were far more somber than I expected. “Twelve more to go before I need to find a master or get trapped into that lamp. It’s not something I’m quick to forget.”

“Me neither.” A fire grew inside me, engulfing me in a desire to cheer him up and I blurted out the first thing that came to mind, forgetting about our serious conversation yesterday about his heart. I mean, after all that, Luke was still my friend and it was time to show him that. “When you’re ready for my hands to give that shiny brass lamp a rub, I’m ready. I’ve been polishing Tabitha’s silverware at home just to get the movement right.” I laughed, pretending to rub the lamp on my lap.

“I’m sure you’ll be perfect at it, but I do not wish to…” He paused, not at all cheered up.

My mouth dried. “You don’t wish to be indentured to me?”

Now, Luke’s somber mood dissolved, replaced with a nice smile that made his eyes twinkle, finally amused by my silverware comment. “That’s not it. I don’t want to be responsible for corrupting you. You’re far too young. I’ve had success with older people withstanding the magic of the lamp.”

“But you were going to have Marge do it sixty years ago. She had to be younger than me.”

Luke tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “There is one trait that helps a master or mistress overcome the lamp’s corruption. It’s how much they care about the genie. How much you care about me.
